Yamato - Passion Tickets
Odaiko drums are huge, traditional Japanese drums with a distinctive sound and require a huge amount of energy and training to play well. Naturally theatrical, the Yamato drumming company from Japan puts on a fun and compelling show, combining ancient Japanese culture with modern performance conventions.
Drums are a pivotal part of traditional Japanese music, heard in Shinto rituals and festivals throughout Japan. In recent history, this distinctive style of drumming has spread beyond the East Asian country, with companies touring the world sharing this music with audiences everywhere. Yamato is one such company which has garnered much praise for their new show Yamato - Passion, after decades of touring.
Founded in 1993 in the Nara Prefecture of Japan, Yamato has performed in 51 different countries. They travel the world performing for more than half the year, and aim to give audiences a renewed enthusiasm for life. They use a range of different drum sizes in their shows, but the massive Odaiko drums that weigh more than half a tonne are one of the company’s most impressive features.
A cast of sixteen drummers are led by Artistic Director Masa Ogawa, who is charged with creating compositions and staging. Yamato’s shows are accompanied by colourful sets and lighting, evoking gig culture as well as classical music. He combines the modern with the traditional to create an experience that is a fusion of cultures all whilst being undeniably Japanese.
Though these styles of drumming performances are often seen on TV and in film, a live Yamato production is an incomparable experience; this is traditional music that is rarely seen live on stage. Yamato - Passion plays a strictly limited number of performances at London's Peacock Theatre. The production runs from 12 March to 31 March 2019.
