What’s On at Opera House Manchester

A packed events schedule is waiting for theatregoers at Opera House Manchester in 2024 when a variety of big musicals and touring shows hit the city. Most exciting amongst these is the smash-hit jukebox musical, & Juliet in July. This Shakespeare meets pop music spectacular previously ran in the West End and is a joyful, pure fun musical for older kids and adults.

One of the top events at Opera House Manchester is the lovely jubbly musical adaptation of Only Fools and Horses, fresh from its West End run. Book your tickets early to see the legendary series turned musical on stage in November. About the Opera House Manchester

The Opera House Manchester is a Grade II listed building that originally opened in 1912 as the New Theatre. Designed by Charles Lovett Gill in the Classical style, it is an expansive commercial theatre in the heart of Manchester.

The venue has undergone several changes of ownership, name and function - including as a cinema and bingo hall - and was renamed the Opera House due to an association with conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. Since 2009, it has been owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group along with its sister venue, Manchester’s Palace Theatre. The theatre now hosts a varied schedule of events each year.

For over 50 years, Manchester Opera House has been a receiving and producing house for landmark productions including the 1958 European premiere of West Side Story, and the 1990s UK regional premiere of The Phantom of the Opera. Following major refurbishments in 2003, the venue continues to host major productions including the world premieres of Ghost the Musical, & Juliet, Bat Out of Hell and Back to the Future the Musical, all of which transferred to the West End.

Manchester’s Opera House is located in the heart of the city, with multiple places to eat and drink in the neighbouring Deansgate. High-end shopping is available in nearby Spinningfields with beautiful architecture nearby, including Manchester Town Hall and the John Rylands Library. On the River Irwell, you can also find eateries and the People’s History Museum. There are excellent transport links within minutes of the theatre, making it easily accessible.

The box office opens for ticket collection 90 minutes before the first performance of the day and remains open until 15 minutes after curtains up.

Theatregoers can relax in the Opera House’s public spaces up to 90 minutes before the start of the performance. It is worth arriving early to enjoy the atmosphere and avoid large queues.

There are bars on all levels of the venue, serving snacks and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks before performances and during the interval. Theatregoers can also book bespoke Ambassador Lounge packages for their visit when booking tickets online.

There is no cloakroom at the theatre. Visitors are advised not to bring any items that they would not be able to hold with them in the auditorium during the performance.

The theatre is located in central Manchester, with lots of restaurants nearby for pre-show dining. Revolución de Cuba, a popular Cuban cocktail bar and tapas restaurant, offer 2/3 course set menus and 3 for £15 tapas deals on weeknights - perfect for pre-theatre dining!
