Broadway’s longest-running American musical wows with sizzling choreography and show-stopping musical numbers.
Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl sent to prison for her lover’s murder. When she meets celebrity singer Velma Kelly and charismatic lawyer Billy Flynn, an obsession with fame, stardom and getting away with murder begins. With songs including “Cell Block Tango” and “All That Jazz” sure to get toes tapping, Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre is a truly beloved New York City institution.
Chicago the musical is based on a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, and features music and lyrics by frequent collaborators John Kander and Fred Ebb, whose work includes the Tony Award-winning Kiss of the Spider Woman. Fred Ebb and the legendary Bob Fosse provide the book, with Fosse also serving as the original director and choreographer.
This revival of Chicago first opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1996, before moving to the Ambassador Theatre in 2003. Director Walter Bobbie (Bright Star, Sweet Charity), choreographer Anne Reinking (Fosse, Goodtime Charlie), and set designer John Lee Beatty (A Delicate Balance, Burn This) are some of the current creative team.
With six Tony Awards and a host of criminally good songs, Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre is a deliciously spectacular piece of musical theater, currently going strong in its third decade.
