The iconic musical returns to Broadway

The August Wilson is the luckiest theater in New York, as classic musical Funny Girl returns to Broadway for the first time since 1964.

Fanny is a girl from the Lower East Side who dreams of performing on stage. Despite her family’s reservations, she rises from Brooklyn music hall singer to one of the biggest stars on Broadway. Funny Girl charts the highs and lows of her career and personal life, as this comedic star navigates fame, fortune and a tempestuous marriage.

Partly based on the real Fanny Brice, this bittersweet comedy features some of the most iconic songs in musical history, including “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and “People”. It first opened on Broadway in 1964, starring Barbra Streisand, and earned an incredible eight Tony Award nominations.

In director Michael Mayer’s revival, Lea Michele stars as Fanny Brice, opposite Ramin Karimloo (Les Misérables) as husband Nick Arnstein. Further casting includes Tovah Feldshuh and Jared Grimes.

This hilarious and heart-warming story hasn’t graced a Broadway stage in almost 60 years, so make sure you book Funny Girl tickets for this iconic musical’s long-awaited return.

Performance dates: 25 Jan 2023 - 31 May 2023

Running time: 2 hours 35 minutes (including an intermission)

Age recommendation: Best for age 10+. Under 4s not permitted.

Special notice: Please note that the appearance of any performer cannot be guaranteed, and is always subject to illness, injury and statutory holiday entitlement. Julie Benko is scheduled to perform the role of Fanny Brice on Thursday evenings.

SeatPlan Recommends: The August Wilson Theatre stage is a little high, so sit in Orchestra rows E - J or Mezzanine rows B and C for the best view of Funny Girl's fast-footed choreography and musical numbers. The Mezzanine overhang is quite intrusive in the very back rows of the Orchestra, so expect to miss some parts of the set from here.

The show was very good, a revival of a great musical. Some miscasting and the romance isn’t really believable but Beanie nails the solos and the show soars when she does. Karimloo is great as Arnstein and it’s been rewritten into a meatier role than in the original. Definitely worth seeing.

A wonderful show and Beanie Feldstein is amazing. Don’t listen to all those negative critic reviews and go see it for yourself. And don’t try to compare her to Streisand. Beanie made it her own and did a fabulous job!

With Lea Michelle, the show is outstanding (was creaky at previous performances without her)
