Martin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning play Hangmen transfers to Broadway after a sell-out season in London. Catch this black comedy at the Golden Theatre from February 28 2020.

After sell-out seasons in London’s West End, Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh’s newest play Hangmen transfers to Broadway in 2020.

Set in the English town of Oldham in 1965, Hangmen dramatizes the abolition of the death penalty. As prolific – and now former - executioner Harry Wade settles in to pull pints at his family-owned pub, the locals crowd round for gruesome stories, and a mysterious newcomer called Mooney lurks in the background.

Full of black humor and psychological thrills, Hangmen premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2015, before transferring to the Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End the same year. After being awarded the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Play, a transfer Off-Broadway to the Atlantic Theatre Company was announced for 2018.

The cast of Hangmen on Broadway includes Game of Thrones star Mark Addy as Harry and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as Mooney, with support from Tracie Bennett (Hairspray) as Alice Wade and John Hodgkinson (The Ferryman) as Pierrepoint.

Playwright Martin McDonagh won an Academy Award in 2006 for Six Shooter and is widely known as the screenwriter of In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. In theater, his darkly comedic work includes The Cripple of Inishmaan.

The play is directed by Matthew Dunster (Love and Money), with set and costume design by Anna Fleischle (Home, I’m Darling), lighting by Joshua Carr (True West) and sound design by Ian Dickson (The Seagull).

Promising laughs and shocks in equal measure, Hangmen at the Golden Theatre begins previews on February 28 2020, with opening night on March 19.
