What is La Bohème about?

This famous opera recounts the ill-fated romance between poor seamstress Mimi and artist Rodolfo, who live in Paris’ Latin Quarter with their bohemian friends. The couple manage to scrape together enough money to get by, until illness hits them with devastating consequences.

Franco Zeffirelli - best-known as a movie director and for his sumptuous adaptation of Romeo and Juliet - premiered his staging of La Bohème at the Met Opera in 1981. Its lavishly detailed and transporting vision has been revisited again and again in the years since, and it is now one of the quintessential versions of Puccini’s opera that audiences can watch.

Who wrote La Bohème?

La Bohème was written by Giacomo Puccini and is one of his most famous creations. The Italian composer’s other works include Tosca and Madama Butterfly, and are all rooted in his distinctive style - grounded in real life rather than fantasy, with rich stories of romance and tragedy.

The opera has a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, and is based on Henri Murger’s 1851 novel Scènes de la vie de bohème.
