The Laura Pels Theater is a modern Off Broadway venue with good sightlines throughout and seating split across two levels. The Orchestra is the largest section, with 16 rows on a good rake, and very little restriction from the Mezzanine overhang at the back. The stage is low so front rows have a comfortable view from seat without having to strain your neck. The Mezzanine has three rows and feels very close to the stage, with just a couple of restricted views from safety and stair rails in the front row and center aisle seats.

Venue Overview

The Laura Pels Theatre is one of a handful of Off Broadway venues located in the NYC theater district. It promises all the excitement of the Great White Way, and the buzz of watching excellent plays and musicals in an intimate setting.

It is located in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, along with the tiny Black Box Theatre, and was developed with the financial backing of the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. Harold Steinberg created the Trust in 1986 to channel his passion for American theater into financial support for playwrights, new work and not-for-profit theater companies.

Audiences visiting this contemporary venue will enjoy feeling close to the stage from all points of the auditorium, which boasts clean sightlines and very few distracting architectural features.

The Laura Pels Theatre is operated by Roundabout Theater Company, and is a hub for new work by established playwrights and revivals of classic plays. It started as it meant to go on upon opening in 2004, with Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel starring Viola Davis. In the years since, acclaimed productions include Joshua Harmon’s Bad Jews, a revival of Merrily We Roll Along, and a musical adaptation of Scotland, PA.

Good Value Seats

The Left and Right Mezzanine are the best value seats at the Laura Pels Theatre. These cheap tickets, compared to the central Orchestra, boast a clear and close view. We recommend these over similarly priced seats at the back of the Orchestra, which feel more enclosed by the overhang.

Premium Seats

For the best views in the Laura Pels Theatre, choose Center Orchestra rows E - G. The low stage means sitting closer isn’t an issue, but a winning mix of perfect proximity and elevated view over the heads in front makes these the best seats.
