Originally premiering at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre to critical acclaim, the stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s classic musical jukebox film Moulin Rouge! opens in New York this spring. A theatrical extravaganza full of pop hits, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will dazzle theatergoers at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
Set in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical invites audiences into a world of excess and grandeur, where bohemians mingle with aristocrats and the champagne flows freely. Amidst the glamor and music of the famous Moulin Rouge dance hall, composer Christian and star chanteuse Satine become doomed lovers.
Natalie Mendoza and Aaron Tveit star as Satine and Christian.Moulin Rouge! The Musical features a book by Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan, whose other work includes Red and Peter and Alice for the stage, and The Aviator, Skyfall and Penny Dreadful for the screen. Director Alex Timbers (Rocky, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) pulls double duty on Broadway with his production of Beetlejuice also hugely popular. Emmy Award nominee and choreographer Sonya Tayeh and designer Dereck McLane are also part of the creative team.
