Leslie Odom Jr. is back on Broadway for the first time since his standout, Tony Award-winning performance in Hamilton in classic comedy Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch at Music Box Theatre. Starring as the eponymous Purlie, a preacher traveling through the Jim Crow-era American South, Odom Jr. leads a talented cast in the first-ever Broadway revival of Ossie Davis’ witty and joyful show.

What is Purlie Victorious about?

Traveling preacher Purlie Victorious Judson is back in his small Georgia hometown, determined to save Big Bethel, the community’s church, and emancipate the cotton pickers on Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee’s plantation. Purlie’s machinations form the backbone of this rousing, laugh-a-minute comic masterpiece by Kennedy Center honoree Ossie Davis, directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, Topdog/Underdog, Fences).

Ossie Davis’ “marvelously exhilarating” (New York Times) play first debuted at the Cort Theatre (now James Earl Jones Theatre) back in 1961, and was adapted into a popular musical, renamed just Purlie, in 1970 at the Broadway Theatre. It was also made into a movie, Gone Are The Days!, starring Davis himself as Purlie.

Tony and Grammy Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. returns to Broadway as Purlie in this “wild, outrageous” (N.Y. Herald Tribune) show. Odom Jr. gained recognition for his incredible performance as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, becoming one of the biggest names in NYC theater during his stint on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s phenomenal musical between 2015 and 2016. He had been with the show since its workshop performances in 2014.

Odom Jr.’s other credits include television show Smash, and an Academy Award-nominated turn as singer Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami. On stage, he has appeared in numerous shows including Tick, Tick… Boom! and Once on This Island.
