Monty Python’s Spamalot Tickets On Sale Soon

Answer me these questions three… are you ready for Spamalot? Is it the funniest musical ever? And are you booking tickets for its exciting return to New York?

This irreverent rip-off of classic movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail flies back to Broadway’s St James Theatre with the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow, direct from a hit sold-out season at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Fans of Monty Python, silly humor and musical theater that doesn’t take itself too seriously should all add this show to their diaries!

What is Spamalot about?

Based on Monty Python’s hilarious movie The Holy Grail, the Spamalot musical is a gloriously silly Arthurian romp that sees Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table set off on a quest to find the most precious of treasures. Nothing is ever simple though, and along the way they encounter flying cows, killer rabbits, French taunts, shrubbery, and the Lady of the Lake! Arthur, Gawain and co might want to “run away! run away” but chivalry and bravery lead them on…

Who wrote Spamalot?

Monty Python member Eric Idle created Spamalot as a stage version of the beloved movie. Packed with all of the jokes, one-liners and songs fans know and love, Idle wrote the book and lyrics, and collaborated on the musical’s score with John Du Prez. This brilliant revival is directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes (Bright Star; Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella), and earned rave reviews in Washington, DC.

Monty Python was one of the leading British comedy troupes of the 20th century, with a number of projects including Monty Python’s Flying Circus, The Meaning of Life and the unforgettable Life of Brian. Their surreal, silly and satirical comic style is on full display in Spamalot, which was last on Broadway back in 2005 and won three Tony Awards including Best Musical. Its name, like the rest of the show, comes straight from The Holy Grail: the Knights of the Round Table who “eat ham, and jam, and Spam a lot”!

Songs in the Spamalot Musical

Theatergoers can expect to hear some familiar tunes from the movie, alongside brand new songs written especially for the Spamalot musical! The show takes inspiration from a variety of sources, including musical theater standards such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim in “The Song That Goes Like This”.

Other songs featured include “Find Your Grail”, “Where Are You”, “The Lady of the Lake” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.

Spamalot is both an original show and one full of easter eggs for fans of Python - so listen out for references to lumberjacks, fish slapping and more as the songs get underway, and don’t forget to clap in time with your coconut shells!
