About the show
True West is an intense character study, exploring the relationship between Austin, a screenwriter, and his older brother Lee. Set in the kitchen of their mother’s California home, where Austin is house-sitting, the play follows the brothers as tensions rise between them; Lee bullies his way into staying in the house, using his brother’s car, and even taking over his new screenplay. Soon, their roles as successful family man and nomadic drifter are somehow reversed, and each finds himself admitting that he may have always wished he were in the other's shoes.
Stars Paul Dano and Ethan Hawke are both best known for their work on screen. Dano has starred in modern classics such as There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine and 12 Years a Slave, whilst Hawke had his breakthrough role in Dead Poet’s Society, following this with acclaimed performances in Reality Bites and Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy.
Writer Sam Shephard was an American actor, playwright, author, screenwriter, and director whose career spanned half a century. A multi-talented writer and performer, Shepard won ten Obie Awards for writing and directing, the most won by any writer or director, as well as receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for his play Buried Child, and a nomination for an Academy Award for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff.
The production is directed by James Macdonald (The Children, Top Girls), with Original Music & Sound Design by Bray Poor and Set Design by Mimi Lien.
