About the Shubert Theatre
Built alongside the 800-seat Booth Theatre between West 44th and 45th Streets, the Shubert Theatre (or the Sam S. Shubert Memorial Theatre) was named to commemorate producers and owners Lee and J.J. Shubert’s late brother.
The venue is almost synonymous with Shubert Alley, a purpose-built walkway between 44th and 45th Streets which some consider the heart of Broadway. It shares a clean, bright exterior with the Booth Theatre, and the interior is decorated with distinctive painted panels around the Boxes, proscenium arch and ceiling. Its mid-size auditorium has become well-regarded for its flexibility, and since opening in 1913 has welcomed a varied program of work.
From Love on the Dole (1936) and Ivanov (starring John Gielgud and Vivien Leigh, 1966) to Kiss Me Kate (1948) and Barbara Streisand’s Broadway debut, I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962), the Shubert Theatre has proven itself a versatile and popular venue. Since 2000, it’s boasted a roster of crowd-pleasing hits including Gypsy (2003), Spamalot (2005) and Matilda the Musical (2013-2017).
