The Richmond Theatre events calendar for 2024 proves you don’t need to travel into central London to enjoy a range of world-class performances. Over the next twelve months, you can catch the hilarious book-to-stage adaptation of The 39 Steps, Kay Mellor's The Syndicate, and David Walliams’s Awful Auntie.

About the Richmond Theatre

Located in one of London’s suburban neighbourhoods, Richmond Theatre first opened in September 1899 with a production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Originally named the Theatre Royal and Opera House, the Grade II listed building was designed by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, and is considered one of the best surviving examples of his work.

The theatre was refurbished and expanded in the 1990s under the supervision of designer Carl Toms, but still features its original beautiful red and gold interior. The sumptuous auditorium has made it a popular filming location, and it has stood in for various other theatres on screen. These include the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre in Finding Neverland and Washington DC’s Ford Theatre in National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Currently run by ATG, Richmond Theatre has a capacity of just 840 in an intimate, comfortable auditorium. It hosts a variety of national touring events including music, dance and comedy, as well as amateur dramatics groups in residence at the venue.

Situated close to the River Thames, the theatre is located opposite Little Green, which neighbours the large Richmond Park. Richmond Station is a short walk behind the theatre, with eateries, shopping and bars all on route. The Royal Botanic Kew Gardens are a short walk away, whilst cinemas and entertainment all are nearby.

The theatre is open 90 minutes before the start of a performance. The beautifully ornate venue is a site to behold, so it is worth arriving early to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a drink before the show.

There is a bar on each level of the theatre, serving wines, beers, spirits, soft-drinks and light snacks. For bespoke service, you can also pre-book the Ambassador Lounge when buying tickets online.

There is no cloakroom Richmond Theatre, and patrons are advised to attend with small bags that can be taken into the auditorium.

Chez Lindsay, on the riverside, is a well-reviewed French restaurant just eight minutes’ walk from the theatre, serving an array of continental meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. For those who enjoy classic British food, The Ivy Café - sister to Covent Garden’s restaurant - offers hearty favourites including shepherd’s pie.
