About the Princess Theatre Torquay

First opening in 1961, acts such as Tommy Cooper and Morecambe and Wise were topping the bill at the Princess Theatre’s debut performance. Built by Torbay Council as part of the redevelopment of the Princess Gardens on the seafront, the building replaced an annual marquee that hosted light variety entertainment. Over the years, the Princess Theatre has been managed by several different companies whilst under the continued maintenance of the council. In 1991, the building was leased to Apollo Leisure and was then taken over by SFX and Clear Channel Entertainment. In 2009, Ambassador Theatre Group bought the theatre and continues to manage it to this day.

The Princess Theatre is the largest venue in the wider Torbay area, with a seating capacity of 1,491. Traditionally hosting family variety shows in the summer, it developed its reputation for hosting West End musicals in the early noughties. These days it continues to host a diverse programme of events including musicals, plays, ballet, opera and concerts.

Torquay’s Princess Theatre is situated on the south coast of Devon, close to a seaside park, with the Southwest Coastal Path running below. The beach is a few minutes away, as is a big wheel which provides fantastic views from high above the water. There are several places to eat and drink in the nearby vicinity, and the theatre has its own café-bar that opens on performance days. Between the theatre and the train station, you can also find adventure golf, the Torre Abbey Museum and large open spaces and parks.

The theatre is open for performances up to 90 minutes before the show begins. Patrons are usually able to take their seats in the auditorium 30 minutes before curtain up. The glass walls of the venue offer excellent views over Princess Pier, so it is worth arriving early to enjoy a drink and take in the sights before a show.

Like several other ATG venues, the Princess Theatre now hosts pizzeria Pizza Al Teatro on-site. This is a great option for pre-theatre dining as you don't have to worry about rushing to the venue after dinner! Their menu offers a range of sourdough pizzas, mezze platters and salads. Other bars are available throughout the auditorium offering wines, beers, spirits, soft-drinks and snacks before the performance and during the interval.

There is no cloakroom at the theatre, and visitors are advised to bring bags and coats small enough to take into the auditorium.

On The Rocks is a casual café-bistro serving a variety of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. Visitors can enjoy a pre-show meal before walking around 10 minutes along the seafront to the theatre. Also within walking distance is Michelin-starred The Elephant Restaurant, which focuses on seasonal à la carte, lunch and tasting menus.

There are a variety of grand Victorian-era hotels on the seafront, including The Imperial Torquay, for those looking for an upmarket option. If you prefer cheap, convenient and comfortable accommodation, Travelodge is 18 minutes from the theatre on the number 12 bus.
