What Is Alcina About?
The production is set on a magical island where we meet Alcina, a powerful sorceress who uses her powers to lure her lovers. When she tires of them, she transforms them into animals. However, her control is put to the test when the knight Ruggiero arrives on the island, and she genuinely falls in love with him. Determined to save him from the grips of Alcina, his fiancée Bradamante arrives on the island disguised as a man. Can Alcina retain the affections of Ruggiero? Or will Bradamante succeed in winning back her husband?
The History of Alcina
Composed by George Frideric Handel and originally staged in London in 1735, Alcina was inspired by an Italian poem by Ludovico Ariosto called Orlando furioso. Handel was a leading figure of Baroque opera, a genre which flourished in Europe between 1600 and 1750. Although popularity with the style dwindled after the mid 18th century, Alcina has had a resurgence in interest, including the debut of Richard Jones’ production at the Royal Opera House in 2022.
