Greek Tragedy, Boldy Reimagined: Elektra Tickets
Fury, revenge and tragedy collide as Oscar winner Brie Larson (Captain Marvel; Room ) makes her West End debut in a stunning new version of Elektra at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Sophokles’ haunting tragic play is back for its first major revival in a decade, directed by Daniel Fish (Oklahoma! ) and translated by award-winning poet Anne Carson. This striking collaboration between creatives at the top of their game promises an explosive evening of theatre, as a timeless tale is freshly reimagined for the 21st century.
What is Elektra about?
Elektra is a young woman plagued by grief and hungry for justice. After her father’s assassination at the hands of her mother, she is determined to avenge his murder, with the help of her long-lost brother Orestes. As she waits for him to join her, she is consumed by an emotional turmoil that can’t be calmed. Soon, the pair are set on a course of savage and overwhelming vengeance… but is it a price worth paying?
Dark, complex and haunting, Elektra is one of Sophokles’ most compelling and urgent tragedies. Its powerful story has kept audiences gripped for centuries, as the chilling story of revenge and familial duty unfolds.
Brie Larson in Elektra
Academy Award winner Brie Larson makes her West End debut as Elektra in this searing production. Larson has gained international recognition for her role as Captain Marvel in the blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe and Apple TV hit Lessons in Chemistry . She won an Oscar for her gut-wrenching performance in Room (2015), and her skill for drawing out raw emotion that chimes deeply with audiences makes her lead role as one of Greek tragedy's most complex and compelling heroines a real must-see event.
Creative Team
Elektra is directed by Daniel Fish, who blew London audiences away in 2023 with a daring contemporary revival of Oklahoma! . His “audacious” (The Times) work on the Broadway musical “[shook] up the familiar” (Time Out), and in his hands, Sophokles’ play is transformed into a theatrical marvel that blends the ancient and the modern to exhilarating effect.
The play is adapted by poet and translator Anne Carson, who is the perfect collaborator for Fish’s distinctive style and vision. Carson is best known for her poetry, which blends personal and contemporary themes with stories from ancient texts. Her collections include verse-novel Autobiography of Red and Nox , an elegy for her estranged late brother.
