What Is the Musical Franz & Marie About?
After facing action at the front, a platoon of soldiers is stationed in an isolated outpost. As the men await further orders, Franz Woyzeck, one of the soldiers, begins to lose his grip on reality. Franz is haunted by hallucinations of a flaming sky and tormented with visceral nightmares - and the only thing that gets him through is his girlfriend Marie and their baby Georgie. Despite the difficulties of Georgie being born out of wedlock, due to Marie and Franz being unable to marry as he was forbidden from taking leave, Franz will do anything to care for his family.
Will Franz be able to provide, or has his psyche been shattered by the aftermath of war?
This haunting, soul-folk musical is infused with 19th-century European folklore and draws inspiration from one of German theatre’s greatest tragedies, exploring themes of class, prejudice and toxic masculinity.
The History of Franz & Marie
The musical is inspired by German playwright Georg Buchner's tragic play 1836 Woyzeck, which was in turn based on a remarkable true story. Woyzeck, which was famously left unfinished when Buchner died before completing the script, has received many different and diverging adaptations due to its ‘blank slate’ ending.
Franz & Marie began life two decades ago as a commission for Korean theatre company Acom, which featured music from folk band The Singing Loins. This new production - the show’s premiere - adapts The Singing Loins show, and features a full cast of actor-musicians.
The Creative Team of Franz & Marie
Franz & Marie is directed by Michael Oakley. The musical is adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard, based on the original book and lyrics by Chris Broderick and music by Rob Shepherd and Broderick, members of The Singing Loins. Arrangements, orchestrations and additional music are by Steven Edis, with choreography by Ben Wright.
