John Lithgow stars as Roald Dahl in the world premiere of Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play, based on real events.

Don’t Miss Giant Tickets

Award-winning actor John Lithgow stars as Roald Dahl in the world premiere of Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play, Giant, directed by Nicholas Hytner at the Royal Court Theatre. Set across one afternoon as Dahl faces backlash for an antisemitic article, the play explores the differences between opinions and rhetoric with dark humour as a star-studded cast brings to life the complicated legacy of a children's icon.

About Giant

The play is a contrast to those typically made with inspiration from Roald Dahl, as it surrounds his personal life. Set in 1983, shortly before the release of the famous novel, The Witches, Dahl was hit with backlash after his antisemitic views were published. The author had two choices: publicly apologise or risk his name, reputation and the empire he had built.

Rosenblatt wrote Giant after many of Dahl’s novels had been through further edits and rewrites to remove discriminatory and derogative language throughout the books. The creator of the play has labelled it as uncomfortably funny, urgent and provocative.

John Lithgow as Roald Dahl in Giant

Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning actor John Lithgow (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Crown) portrays the famous author, Roald Dahl and shares the stage with Olivier Award-winning actor Elliot Levey (Cold Way, Cabaret) for the limited run of Giant. Both actors aren’t strangers to the stage and screen, having risen to fame in the late 90’s to early 2000s. You won’t want to miss these incredible actors in this debut performance of Giant.

Having worked as a freelance director across the world, Mark Rosenblatt has packed a punch with his very first play. With Olivier Award-winner Nicholas Hytner directing the play (Guys & Dolls and One Man, Two Guvnors), you won’t want to miss its debut as it’s set to be the show of the season at the Royal Court Theatre.

This provocative play that’s incredibly new to the scene is proving popular from the directing and casting alone. Don’t miss the repercussions of hateful words written by the seemingly friendly author, Roald Dahl, portrayed by John Lithgow as the play debuts on stage at the Royal Court Theatre.

This was a very compelling and sometimes uncomfortable play about Roald Dahl's anti-semitism. The subject matter is also very current with the awful events in the Middle East. John Lithgow is simply superb as Dahl - a real monster, antagonistic, unf Read more

Giant - This is one hell of a first play for five years in drafting and two years in workshopping and production. The writing was superb as it sought to trouble and recast Roald Dahl as not only an anti-semite but as a misogynist and narcissist full Read more

Superb. Challenging, provocative, thought-provoking play with striking parallels to today. John Lithgow and Romola Garai’s performances riveting. Not an easy watch at times but very much worth it.
