Award-winning actor John Lithgow stars as Roald Dahl in the world premiere of Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play, Giant, directed by Nicholas Hytner at the Royal Court Theatre. Set across one afternoon as Dahl faces backlash for an antisemitic article, the play explores the differences between opinions and rhetoric with dark humour as a star-studded cast brings to life the complicated legacy of a children's icon.About Giant
The play is a contrast to those typically made with inspiration from Roald Dahl, as it surrounds his personal life. Set in 1983, shortly before the release of the famous novel, The Witches, Dahl was hit with backlash after his antisemitic views were published. The author had two choices: publicly apologise or risk his name, reputation and the empire he had built.Rosenblatt wrote Giant after many of Dahl’s novels had been through further edits and rewrites to remove discriminatory and derogative language throughout the books. The creator of the play has labelled it as uncomfortably funny, urgent and provocative.

This is an exceptional show with a very important message, particularly at this point in the current conflict in Gaza. It is very challenging to hear a writer whose words mean so much saying some very very nasty and quite frankly unspeakable things. Read more

Star casting with John Lithgow, adds a touch of class to this entertaining drama. I would do some research about the alleged anti-Semitism of Roald Dahl, before seeing the show, as otherwise you might be confused as to what the play is going to be a Read more

Superb. Challenging, provocative, thought-provoking play with striking parallels to today. John Lithgow and Romola Garai’s performances riveting. Not an easy watch at times but very much worth it.
