Charing Cross Theatre

The extraordinary life of a star cyclist who defied Italy’s fascist regime is transformed into a brand new musical.

An extraordinary true story of resistance

Discover an extraordinary piece of European history in Joy Ride at Charing Cross Theatre this year. The remarkable legacy of Tour de France winner and anti-fascist agent Gino Bartali, transformed into a brand new musical, proves that truth is often more inspiring than fiction.

Bartali’s cycling career may have made him one of Italy’s most beloved athletes, but it was also the perfect cover for an anti-fascist operation that went up against Mussolini’s harsh regime. With fake identity cards hidden in the frame of his bike, Bartali cycled thousands of miles and helped hundreds of Jewish refugees escape during World War Two.

His colourful life and strong belief in protecting others no matter the cost is now shared in an incredible new musical from father-daughter duo Victoria and Todd Buchhol.

Olivier Award winner Kelly Devine directs a cast including Josh St Clair (Wicked; Frozen) as Gino Bartali, Amy Di Bartolomeo (SIX) as Adriana Bani and Italian actor Fed Zanni as Major Mario Carita.

This is my second time seeing this wonderful show that’s based on a true story. It’s very humbling to hear stories of those who risked their lives to help others during the war. The score is exhilarating, with soaring vocals from Josh, Amy and Niall. Read more
