A dark and magical fairytale musical

Celebrate Christmas at the National Theatre with a vividly imaginative retelling of Sleeping Beauty, as new musical Hex returns to the South Bank venue this winter.

Travel deep into the woods, where a lonely fairy wishes for someone to bless. Her dream comes true when she is summoned to the palace to help the princess sleep… but it quickly turns into a nightmare, with a curse placed on the land. Frantic to make everything right, the fairy embarks on a hundred year journey to bring about a happily ever after.

Rufus Norris (Small Island; wonder.land) directs this spellbinding new musical based on classic fairytales, developed from his and Katrina Lindsay’s original concept. The Hex musical features music by Jim Fortune, a book by Tanya Ronder, lyrics by Norris, designs by Katrina Lindsay and choreography by Jade Hackett.

An unusual story of sleeping beauty, very funny in parts and also sad in parts, I really enjoyed it. Acting was great and some amazing songs were sung perfectly. Set was colourful and put together well.

Magnificent show, outstanding voices, nice mix of actors, clever set, fascinating storyline (the details in the programme explain why some things happen). Thought provoking and such a shame more people couldn’t see it, we would go again.
