What Is Jesus Christ Superstar About?
Jesus Christ Superstar retells the final days of Jesus, from the perspective of his disciple Judas Iscariot. The production is set against a backdrop of political unrest and growing public fascination with Jesus Nazareth, who continues to challenge the Roman authorities with his growing influence over people. Whilst the growing tension between his followers, religious leaders, and the Roman authorities fizzes underneath, Jesus Christ Superstar will ultimately lead to betrayal and crucifixion.
The musical features the timeless rock anthems, including “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, “Gethsemane”, “Heaven on Their Minds”, and the title number “Superstar”.

Sam Ryder reprises his role as Jesus as the show transfers to Drury Lane. The British singer-songwriter rose to international fame after representing the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022, where he placed second. His power ballad "Space Man" was the UK's best result in over two decades. Jesus Christ Superstar is his West End debut.

The Creative Team of Jesus Christ Superstar
Olivier Award winner Tim Sheader directs the production (Hello, Dolly!, To Kill A Mockingbird), alongside choreography from Olivier winner and Regents Park Open Air Theatre Artistic Director Drew McOnie (In the Heights, Carousel). They reunite after working on the 2016/17 Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Tony winner Tom Scutt (Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof) designs.
The creative team also includes Musical supervision by Tom Deering (Standing at the Sky’s Edge), lighting design by Lee Curran (A Streetcar Named Desire), sound design by Adam Fisher (Sunset Boulevard), and fight direction from Kate Waters (War Horse).
