What is the musical Kimberly Akimbo about?

Kimberly Levaco lives with a rare genetic condition that prematurely ages her four times faster than her friends. Although she is excited to celebrate becoming sweet 16, Kimberly is also trying to navigate high school while looking like she’s 74 and having dysfunctional parents. She’s swept into an unexpected friendship with an awkward nerd Seth, and her ex-con aunt shows up with a get-rich-quick scam. Kimberly Akimbo is ultimately a musical about morality, belonging and identity which will take you along on the adventure of a lifetime!

Kimberly Akimbo made its Off-Broadway debut in 2001 at the South Coast Repertory in California, before making its debut on Broadway the following year at the Booth Theatre. That production received critical acclaim and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Kimberly Akimbo has had subsequent tours across the world, and this production at the Hampstead Theatre marks the musical’s European premiere.

Maria Friedman plays the role of Kimberly Levaco. With a multitude of accolades to her name, including three Olivier Awards, Maria is well known to audiences for shows on both sides of the Atlantic. Her theatre credits include Merrily We Roll Along, Chicago, The Woman in White, and Sunday in the Park with George.

Alice Fearn plays the role of Debra. Her theatre credits include Wicked, Les Miserables, Come From Away and the recent UK tour of Dear Evan Hansen.

The Creative Team of Kimberly Akimbo

The award-winning director and former Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, Michael Longhurst, directs this production. His previous credits include Next to Normal, The Band’s Visit, and Caroline, or Change.
