In 16th-century rural France, a young peasant woman, Bertrande, is devastated when her husband Martin disappears from their village, abandoning her. Years later, Martin returns. But now, Martin is kinder, gentler and more loving. Is this man truly Martin - or someone claiming to be him? Based on the extraordinary true story, this reimagining of Martin Guerre features new music, lyrics and folk-inspired orchestrations.
The History of Martin Guerre
The show originally premiered in the West End in 1996, at the Prince Edward Theatre. It underwent several major revisions and later won the 1997 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Musical and Best Choreography. Martin Guerre has since toured internationally throughout Europe and the US. This brand-new reimagining of the show runs in a semi-staged format for a strictly limited season.

The Creative Team of Martin Guerre
Martin Guerre has a book by Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg, the Academy Award-nominated and Tony-winning team behind Les Miserables and Miss Saigon. Music is by Schönberg, and the original French lyrics are by Boublil, with English lyrics by Boublil and Stephen Clark (Zorro). This reworking features new lyrics by Boublil, Annabel Mutale Reed and Paul Hodge (Round the Twist), with additional material by Hodge.
Development and direction is by Matthew Warcus. Warcus is a Tony and Olivier Award winner, and the current Artistic Director of the Old Vic. His credits include Matilda the Musical, A Christmas Carol, Present Laughter, Lungs, and Much Ado About Nothing. Martin Guerre is the penultimate production in Warchus’ final season as Artistic Director.
