What Is The Musical Nanny McPhee About?

In Victorian England, following the death of their mother, the Brown children have become incredibly naughty, and their widower father is struggling to cope. That is, until, one stormy night they are visited by the hideous Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar, magical ways transform the behaviour of the children and the lives of the whole family. Will the Brown children learn to behave with a sprinkling of sorcery?

The History of Nanny McPhee the Musical

Nanny McFee is based on the 2005 film of the same name, which is based on well-loved children’s book Nurse Matilda. The film’s all-star cast included Thompson herself as the titular Nanny and Colin Firth as Mr Brown, as well as stage and screen legends Imelda Staunton, Sir Derek Jacoby, Angela Lansbury and Adam Godley.

The musical has been workshopped to develop the show, and has been long-rumoured for a West End debut, with Thompson stating to The New Yorker Magazine that she hoped the musical would premiere in London in 2023! The show is now confirmed to premiere in 2027, with further details to be announced.

Dame Emma Thompson is a British writer, actor and national treasure. Her many accolades include two Academy Awards, three BAFTAs, two Golden Globe Awards, an Emmy Award and two Grammy nominations. Thompson may be best known for her acting roles in Love Actually and the Harry Potter series, but she’s also an acclaimed screenwriter. Thompson's writing credits include her Oscar-winning adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, Bridget Jones’ Baby (cowritten with Helen Fielding), and the screenplay for the original Nanny McPhee film.

Clark is a Scottish musician, songwriter and producer, best known as the front man for 80s pop band Danny Wilson. His credits include hits for Natalie Imbruglia, Demi Lovat, Delta Goodrum and The Veronicas, as well as co-creating the scores for films Sing Street and Powerballad.
