Duke of York’s Theatre Renamed Tom Stoppard Theatre

Creating a lasting tribute to one of the most influential playwrights in British theatre, the Duke of York’s Theatre has officially been renamed the Tom Stoppard Theatre. It takes the 133-year-old West End venue, located on St Martin’s Lane, into an exciting new era. Who Is Tom Stoppard? 

With a career spanning more than five decades, Sir Tom Stoppard passed away in November 2025. He is one of the most acclaimed and widely recognised British playwrights of modern times, and received many honours during his lifetime, including a record five Tony Awards, a knighthood and appointed to the Order of Merit in 2000.  

Sir Tom Stoppard has penned some of the most defining pieces of theatre during his career, including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Jumpers, Travesties, The Real Thing and Arcadia, which was recently staged at the Duke of York’s Theatre before its name change. Tom Stoppard Plays in London offers a great insight into the journey of work which has been staged in London over the years.  

Discussing the name change, Andrew Rawlinson, London Business Director of ATG Entertainment, said: “Sir Tom Stoppard gave the British theatre some of its most brilliant and best loved work, and he did it with a wit and a humanity that audiences carried home with them. The theatre has been a home to his plays for years, and it will now carry his name for the audiences and the writers who come after him. We could not be prouder to look after it.” 

Quick History of the Tom Stoppard Theatre 

The theatre originally opened as the Trafalgar Theatre in 1892 before being renamed the Duke of York’s Theatre three years later, in 1895. It has played a significant role in theatrical history, including being the venue that hosted the 1904 premiere of J.M.Barrie’s Peter Pan. Lots of acclaimed productions and many of the country’s biggest names in entertainment have performed here, including Charlie Chaplin, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Helen Mirren, and Dame Imelda Staunton. 

The renaming of the Tom Stoppard Theatre was announced in June 2026, with the name officially changing in September. Physical changes, including the theatre’s signage, are now visible for people to see when they are in London.  

What Shows Are Playing at the Tom Stoppard Theatre? 

The Tom Stoppard Theatre begins its new era with RENT, a West End revival of Jonathan Larson’s genre-defying musical. Beginning performances on 29 September, RENT follows a group of bohemian friends over the course of a year as they grapple with addiction, illness and artistic endeavours in 1980s New York. For the production, the theatre will be staged in the round to offer an electric experience.
