Oedipus Tickets: A Breathtaking Classic Reimagined
Greek tragedy becomes a gripping modern-day political thriller as Lesley Manville and Mark Strong star in a tense and explosive new version of Oedipus from visionary director Robert Icke. Icke’s bold version of this brutal classic premiered to huge acclaim in the Netherlands, and now it is West End audiences’ chance to see it at Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited season. Tickets are set to sell fast for this star-studded play, so book early! What is Robert Icke’s Oedipus about?
It is election night, and the polls have predicted a landslide victory. But everything is about to change…Acclaimed director Robert Icke has transformed the doomed ancient Greek hero into a contemporary political giant as he awaits the result of a tough election campaign. When a prediction is made that he will commit the most heinous of crimes, truths unravel and Oedipus must face the tragic consequences.
Icke’s Sophocles adaptation originated in the Netherlands, performed in Dutch by the International Theater Amsterdam company, and was noted for its exciting format: the story was told in real-time as a clock counted down over two hours, making every second of this taught thriller an edge-of-your-seat experience.
Writer-director Icke is known for breathing new life into classic plays. His brilliantly modern productions of Oresteia, Hamlet, Mary Stuart, and The Doctor have all garnered critical acclaim, and with his revelatory updating, Oedipus looks set to follow suit.
