What Is the Musical Pride About?
It’s the 1980s, and Thatcher is closing down the mines. As the strikes rage on across the country, a group of queer activists in London, led by 24-year-old Mark Ashton, realise they may have more in common with the striking workers than they think. The gang travels to Wales to express solidarity and help raise funds for the small mining community, forming activist group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. Though LGSM and the villagers seem like an unlikely alliance, they soon both learn the true meaning of acceptance and solidarity - and make history.
The History of Pride the Musical
Pride the Musical is based on the 2014 Pride film, which had a script by Stephen Beresford and was directed by Matthew Warchus. The film starred huge names including Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott and Imelda Staunton, and was based on the remarkable real-life story of Mark Ashton and LGSM, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, an activist group formed during the 1984-85 miners’ strikes. The film won the Queer Palm award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
The musical made its world premiere at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff from March to April 2026, before transferring to the National Theatre’s Dorfman stage later that year, where it sold out almost its entire run.

Pride the Musical Creative Team
Pride the Musical has a book and lyrics by the film’s screenwriter Stephen Beresford (The Last of the Haussmans, Fanny and Alexander), with music by Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen and DJ Walde.
Olivier Award winner Matthew Warchus directs. Warchus was the Artistic Director of the Old Vic Theatre from 2015 to 2026. His credits include Matilda the Musical, Present Laughter, Groundhog Day the Musical and the original 2014 Pride film.
