What is the play The Daughter of Time about?

In 1950s London, police inspector Alan Grant is fighting boredom while laid up in hospital for a broken leg. To entertain him, a friend suggests he investigate a historical mystery - the crimes of King Richard III. But what begins as a frivolous distraction soon becomes an enthralling mystery as Grant investigates the “cold case” murder of the Princes in the tower. With the assistance of a heartsick historical researcher from America, and a cast of characters including opinionated nurses and scheming Shakespearean actors, Grant soon becomes embroiled in the investigation, battling against the scepticism of his deputy inspector and falling into a romantic entanglement along the way. Will Grant crack the case of the Princes and solve the mystery of his own love life?

The Daughter of Time is based on the novel of the same name by Josephine Tey, first published in 1951.The Daughter of Time is Tey’s best-known novel, and was voted number one in the list of Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time by the British Crime Writers' Association.

The Daughter of Time is adapted by M. Kilburg Reedy. Reedy is an award-winning American playwright, songwriter and producer. Her other credits include Second Lady, Astronaut, Fairytale Romance, Spin: A Musical Myth and an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth. She is a Drama Critics Circle and Drama-Logue Award winner.

Jenny Eastop directs. Eastop is a British director, producer and the artistic director of Mercurius Theatre Company. Her credits include Dug Out/Suffragette Suite at Battersea Arts Centre, The Cricket Test at Riverside Studios, Spirit of the Ogoni at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and A Trick to Catch the Old One for the National Theatre Studio, as well as assistant director credits with the RSC, Chichester Festival Theatre and the National Theatre.

The Daughter of Time is based on the novel by Josephine Tey. Josephine Tey was the pen name of Scottish novelist, playwright and screenwriter Elizabeth MacKintosh (1896-1952), who also produced work under the pseudonym Gordon Daviot. Her works include the Inspector Alan Grant series of crime novels (including The Daughter of Time), Miss Pym Disposes, The Privateer, and the play Richard of Bordeaux, which premiered at the Arts Theatre and starred Richard Gielgud.
