The Greatest Showman is the heavily fictionalised portrayal of the life of P. T. Barnum. A popular showman and entertainer, the story follows his rise from humble beginnings to create a circus from a collective of unique performers. However, in his pursuit of success, he will be forced to choose between his dreams and the people he loves most.

When Is The Greatest Showman Coming to the West End?

Although unconfirmed, we expect The Greatest Showman to be in the West End sooner rather than later, with lots of gossip speculating that it will be in town in late 2026 or early 2027. As for the venue? Our money is on Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which is currently home to Hercules and has previously hosted big family shows like Disney's Frozen the Musical

The History of The Greatest Showman Musical

The movie was released in 2017 and starred Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Zendaya. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards, with the musical score being incredibly popular and winning awards, including Top Soundtrack at the Billboard Music Awards in 2019.

The news that a musical adaptation of The Greatest Showman was announced in 2024, with the show set to premiere in 2026 at the Bristol Hippodrome. The musical made its debut on 15 March 2026, with the limited spring engagement selling out entirely. This world premiere was always rumoured to be a lead-up to a planned run in the West End.

The production does feature songs from the film, including “Never Enough”, “This Is Me” and “Rewrite The Stars”, as well as five new songs being contributed by the film’s songwriters Ben Pasek and Justin Paul. The Greatest Showman Musical is the first stage adaptation of a 20th Century Studios film by Disney.

The Greatest Showman Musical Creative Team

The book for The Greatest Showman Musical has been written by Tim Federle, known for creating and serving as the showrunner for The High School Musical: The Series on Disney+. He has also created the upcoming Disney+ series Coven Academy.

Paul and Pasek, Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, have created the music and lyrics for the musical. They are best known for their work on La La Land, The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen. They have won multiple awards during their career and are some of the youngest EGOT winners.

Casey Nicholaw acts as director and choreographer for the production. He is a two-time Tony Award winner with credits including The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, Disney’s Aladdin and Some Like It Hot.

The rest of the creative team includes music supervision, orchestrations and dance music arrangements by Alex Lacamoire, scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Gregg Barnes, costume design by Sky Switser, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Peter Hylenski, video design by George Reeve, circus creation and design by Lorenzo Pisoni, special effects design by Jeremy Chernick, hair and wigs design by Josh Marquette, make-up design by Milagros Medina-Cerdeira and illusions design by Skylar Fox.
