The Last Ship in London

International superstar and Grammy winner Sting stars in The Last Ship, coming to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, just a short walk from Covent Garden. The Last Ship is inspired by Sting’s album The Soul Cages and his childhood growing up in Newcastle and follows a shipbuilding community that must grapple with the closure of their last shipyard. This brand-new staging of Sting’s “poignant and powerful” (Sunday Mirror) musical features an updated book and lyrics and comes to London for a strictly limited run - you won’t want to miss it.

What Is the Musical The Last Ship About?

When Gideon Fletcher, a young sailor, returns to his North East hometown after seventeen years at sea, he is shocked to learn that the local shipyard, the heart of the community, is closing. With the community in crisis, picket lines are drawn and a half-built ship towers over the town. As the men begin to build the ship, the shipyard's foreman, Jackie White, along with his wife Peggy, must put aside their own problems and fight to preserve the town's future against the gathering clouds of an oncoming storm.

This rousing story of loss, price and connection is based on Sting’s album The Soul Cages and features songs including “Island of Souls”, “All This Time” and “When We Dance”.

The History of The Last Ship

Inspired by Sting’s childhood growing up in Wallsend, Northumberland, The Last Ship was first developed from 2011-2013, with readings and workshops in the US and Newcastle. The production later premiered in America, with an initial staging in Chicago before it transferred to Broadway in 2024, earning two Tony nominations. In 2018, the show was revised and staged in the UK, beginning in Newcastle Upon Tyne, followed by a tour of the UK, Ireland and Europe.

This brand new staging has been specially adapted and revised further, and features new scenes and songs unique to the show’s 2026 run. The production comes to London for a strictly limited run following an international tour, with Sting scheduled to perform at all dates.
