I Wanna be a Producer!: The Producers Tickets On Sale Now
The Menier Chocolate Factory’s acclaimed production of The Producers transfers to the West End’s Garrick Theatre this year! Mel Brooks' irreverent, boundary-pushing musical about two men who try to commit fraud by mounting a guaranteed-to-fail Broadway show is “irresistible, absurd and joyful, both celebrating and sending up the power of theatre” (The Guardian). The Producers sold out its run off the West End so “don’t be stupid, be a smartie” and book your tickets today! What is the musical The Producers about?
Once the “King of Broadway”, producer Max Bialystock is down on his luck, a washed-up hack who now earns a living conning little old ladies into investing for shows that never happen. When nervous accountant Leo Bloom comes to audit Bialystock and discovers he’s been cooking the books, Bloom has the revelation that a show that flops could earn more than one that succeeds. So... the pair team up to produce the worst show on Broadway. They land upon the perfect script, Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden: a "love letter to Hitler" written by pigeon-obsessed ex-Nazi Franz Liebkin, and the perfect director - campy cross-dresser Roger de Bris and his partner and assistant Carmen Ghia, who live by the motto “Keep It Gay”.Swedish bombshell Ulla rounds out their gang of misfits, joining as both chorus girl and office assistant, and Leo quickly falls for her. Once the funds are raised, Leo and Max are ready to make a show that’s sure to be a disaster - and when the show closes early, they’ll skip town with the money and head to Rio de Janeiro. But when “Opening Night” changes everything, Bialystock and Bloom must figure out what to do when the show is an unexpected smash hit.
Based on Mel Brooks' 1967 satirical cult classic film, which starred Zero Mostell and Gene Wilder, The Producers is a provocative and hilarious “equal-opportunity offender” (The Standard). The original Broadway production opened in 2001, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards, and was later adapted into a movie musical starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, who originated the lead roles on stage. Featuring side-splitting songs including “Der Guten Tag Hop Clop”, “Keep it Gay”, “We Can Do It” and “Springtime for Hitler” - a song dubbed “a contender for the funniest showtune ever written” by TimeOut - The Producers remains as risqué and riotous as ever.
The Menier Chocolate Factory hosted the first major production of The Producers in London for almost 20 years and delighted audiences and critics alike, with its “vigour, sparkle and controlled wildness” (The Guardian). Don’t miss out on a gay old time when this “grimy, funny and well-judged” (TimeOut) production transfers to the West End - book today!
