What is the Sleeping Beauty ballet about?

When Princess Aurora is born, Carabosse, an evil fairy, is seized by jealousy and curses the young girl: on her sixteenth birthday, Aurora will prick her finger on a spindle, and die. Determined to save the princess, her godmother, the Lilac Fairy, wields her magic. While she cannot break the curse, she can alter it - and so when the fateful day comes, Aurora does not die, but falls into a deep sleep instead. The slumber will last for 100 years, unless it is broken by true love's kiss. Will the dashing prince be able to awaken Aurora and break the curse?

This bewitching ballet first premiered in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1890, with choreography by Marius Petipa. One of Tchaikovsky's longest and most beloved ballets, The Sleeping Beauty, has received many revivals since. MacMillan’s stunning take on the classic story both expands upon and pays reverence to Petipa’s original breathtaking choreography. First premiering in Berlin in 1967, this revival of Macmillan's work is brought to exquisite life by the English National Ballet, and marks the first time Macmillan’s production has been performed on the Royal Albert Hall’s stage.
