The Snail and the Whale tickets

Escapist fun for all the family

Join a tiny snail and an enormous whale as they embark on a seafaring adventure with The Snail and the Whale tickets in London. The show plays a Christmas season at the Apollo Theatre.

Based on Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s beloved picture book, The Snail and the Whale sees a plucky young girl and her father re-imagine the unlikely story of a snail’s intrepid trip around the world. The tiny adventurer hitches on the tail of a huge humpback whale, and together the duo explore the oceans on an amazing journey. But when the whale gets beached, can his companion save him?

Featuring colourful sets and catchy music to engage even the youngest audience members, The Snail and the Whale is the latest hit from the Olivier Award-nominated Tall Stories (The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom). It is directed by Tall Stories co-founder Toby Mitchell, designed by Isla Shaw and composed by Richard Heacock.

Don your wellies and sailing caps for some thrill-seeking fun this festive period at the Apollo Theatre.

I've always wondered how a 5 minute book can be spread out to a one hour show, but thoroughly enjoyed the take on this book. Story is told through the eyes of a daughter and her father who works at sea. She longs to go with him and see the world. Parallels between the father and daughter and whale and snail are obvious and the relationship between father and daughter was very good - as were the songs, games and use of the scenery to recreate the story.

The show was very good and the actors were brilliant! Engaged well with the audience and got them involved. Think the set was clever but think the whale could have been represented in a more exciting way especially for younger children. Maybe projected via a back screen to give more realism. However, we all enjoyed the performance.

As an adult I got really bored. The kids seemed to be enjoying but I’m sure there could have been much more to offer to thrill the kids. There were only three performers, and no exciting whale or snail.
