Three Sisters Tickets

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Anton Chekhov’s masterful domestic drama is performed by candlelight. A new version by Rory Mullarkey.

Three Sisters Tickets - Chekhov By Candlelight

For the first time in ten years of Sam Wanamaker Playhouse history, Anton Chekhov’s work is performed alongside Shakespeare as part of the venue’s latest season. Chekhov's Three Sisters play is a masterful study of the human condition that interrogates one family’s legacy and love led astray. Experience a new translation by Rory Mullarkey (The Wolf from the Door) and find out why Chekhov and Shakespeare are two of the greatest playwrights to have ever put pen to paper.

About Chekhov’s Three Sisters

In a small town in the middle of nowhere, there are three sisters. There is also their brother, his fiancé, the teacher, the doctor, the old woman, and soldiers stationed not too far away.

Olga, Masha and Irina’s world is, slowly but surely, going up in flames and their potential is withering away. Can they create the change they long for?

Three Sisters is a compelling domestic drama, and alongside Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull is considered one of Chekhov’s greatest works.

Shakespeare Meets Chekhov at the Globe

Two of the most iconic names in theatre share the same stage for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse’s new season, and audiences have the chance to see how their transformative impact has lasted over hundreds of years. Both playwrights were masters of exploring the human condition from various perspectives, with memorable characters and plotlines that theatregoers return to again and again.

Three Sisters plays alongside Shakespeare’s late tragi-comedy Cymbeline and All’s Well That Ends Well.

Creative Team

Irish playwright Rory Mullarkey’s new adaptation has its world premiere at the candlelit playhouse. Mullarkey studied Russian at the University of Cambridge and previously translated The Cherry Orchard for Michael Boyd’s 2018 production at the Bristol Old Vic.

Three Sisters is directed by Caroline Steinbeis (The Contingency Plan, Sheffield Crucible: Rutherford and Son). She was last at the Globe in 2015, directing John Ford’s 17th-century tragedy The Broken Heart.
