What Is the Opera Un Ballo in Maschera About?

A murderous affair, a spurned nobleman, a deadly prophecy.

King Gustavo III of Sweden is tormented by longing for his closest friend, Count Anckarstroem’s wife, Amelia. Though his conscience sways him from acting on his lust, his mind is consumed by desire, and when the Count warns the king of a conspiracy that threatens his life, Gustavo ignores his advice. When a visiting fortune teller, Madame Ulrica Arvidson, gives the King the news he has longed to hear - Amelia returns his feelings - he is delighted. But Ulrica’s prophecy comes with a warning that the next man to shake the king's hand will be his murderer, and it just so happens to be Anckarstroem who fulfils the prediction….

The History of Un Ballo in Maschera

Un Ballo in Maschera (aka A Masked Ball) is a 1859 opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Antonio Somma, based on an earlier libretto by Eugène Scribe for Daniel Auber's earlier five act opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué.

The opera is loosely based on real historical events, the assassination of Sweden’s King Gustav III by aggrieved nobleman Jacob Johan Anckarström, and the story of fortune-teller Madame Ulrica Arvidsson, who allegedly predicted the event.
