What Is the Play War Horse About?

At the outbreak of the First World War, a Devonshire farm boy, Albert, is separated from his beloved horse, Joey, when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent overseas. Too young to enlist, Albert can’t let go and instead sets out on a daunting journey that pulls him into a changing world, where ordinary lives are swept up by extraordinary events, determined to bring his friend home. Across village fields, training grounds, and the brutal churn of the trenches, War Horse follows the bond between boy and horse as it’s tested by distance, duty, and survival.

The History of War Horse

War Horse first premiered at the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre in October 2007. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved children's novel, the production is known for its innovative, incredibly life-like puppetry work from the Handspring Puppet Company - the puppeteers spent time at stables during rehearsals, studying how horses move so the onstage behaviour felt authentic.

Critically acclaimed, the production returned for a further run at the National, transferred to the West End and later expanded internationally, including a major Broadway run. War Horse has earned numerous awards, snagging several Olivier and Tony Awards, including a Special Tony Award recognising the puppet work.
