About the Bloomsbury Theatre
The Bloomsbury Theatre is a small, state-of-the-art theatre located in the heart of central London.
An official part of University College London, the theatre serves as the Student Union’s designated performance space, as well as hosting a diverse range of outside productions, including kids' shows, stand-up comedy, dance and concerts. First opened in 1968, the theatre was initially named Central Collegiate Building Auditorium (quite the mouthful!), then the Collegiate Theatre, before it was later renamed in the 80s to reflect its location in the vibrant Bloomsbury district. In 2018, the venue underwent extensive renovation, refurbishing seats, carpets, dressing rooms - and even the theatre’s roof!
Many big names have performed at the intimate theatre, including pop superstar Adele, comedian and UCL alumnus Ricky Gervais, jazz legend Gregory Porter, and internationally renowned percussion-based theatre group Stomp! Academy Award-winning film director Christopher Nolan, best known for his movies Inception and Oppenheimer, and his wife, and long-term producer, Emma Thomas, also credit the Bloomsbury Theatre in being instrumental in their meeting, and in their careers - both getting their start in directing and producing at the theatre as UCL students!
