What is the musical Cats about?
Once a year, the slinking stray cats and rebellious dreamers of London gather under the full moon for the Jellicile ball - a special time where one particular puss will be chosen to be reborn. As the cats gather, they sing, dance, celebrate, and tell their "tails". There’s the elderly patriarch Old Deuteronomy, the acrobatic, trouble-making twins Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, the devilish Macavity the mystery cat, sweet and quiet white kitten Victoria, and the outcast Grizabella, each with their own story to tell. But who will be chosen to ascend to the Heaviside Layer?
Cats is based on T.S. Eliot’s children’s poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The musical premiered in May 1981, and was a critical success, holding the record for longest-running West End Musical until 2006, when it was surpassed by Les Misérables. The musical has won several Olivier and Tony awards, and has enjoyed many revivals, tours and adaptations internationally, including a film adaptation in 2019 which starred Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Jennifer Hudson. This brand new staging features all your favourite songs from the show, including “Memory”, “Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats”, “Magical Mr Mistoffelees” and "Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat".
