What Is the Play Cloud 9 About?

Africa, during the Victorian era: patriarch and colonial administrator Clive, his wife, son, and servant each struggle to fit into the roles their society expects of them.

The action shifts to 1970s London, but only a short few years have gone by for the characters. The family must make sense of themselves in a world where the repercussions of Empire linger, and freedom calls out to them all.

The History of Cloud 9

One of Churchill’s most renowned works, Cloud 9 was first workshopped with the Joint Stock Theatre Company in the late 1970s, premiering at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, in February 1979. The play has since had several major revivals, including a premiere at the Royal Court starring Miriam Margolyes and a run off-Broadway in New York. Renowned for it’s gender bending, experimental form, and razor-sharp critique of societal norms, Cloud 9 has featured in the National Theatre's NT2000 poll of the 100 most significant plays of the 20th century and Time Out New York's list of the "best plays of all time".
