What Is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Play Purpose About?
Meet the Jaspers, a powerful family with a decades-long influence on Black American politics, for whom reputation is everything. Their family line includes congressmen, pastors, and civil rights leaders - but underneath this perfect facade, secrets lurk. When Nazareth - youngest son, outsider, and black sheep of the family - comes home to Illinois for a family dinner, he brings with him an uninvited guest and an unexpected reckoning. As a snowstorm descends, truths are brought to light and the family are forced to grapple with their history, their faith, and their legacy.
The History of Purpose
Purpose premiered in Chicago in 2024, produced and performed by legendary theatre company Steppenwolf Theatre, to critical acclaim. The play later transferred to Broadway in 2025, where it earned the Tony Award for Best Play, as well as Tony nominations for five of the six actors in the original cast. The show also won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
This European premiere features five of the original Broadway cast, reprising their roles.
