Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Closes 20th April

Love and rebellion fill the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as Shakespeare’s late tragi-comedy returns, directed by Jennifer Tang.

Love and Rebellion With Cymbeline Tickets

Step into the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and experience the rebellious delights of Shakespeare’s tragic comedy, Cymbeline . Two ancient kingdoms are united by marriage in one of the playwright’s final works, which features some of his greatest hits: long-lost family members, forbidden romance, separated lovers, the stresses of war, and a final reconciliation. The play returns to the Globe for the first time in ten years, performed in the venue’s magical candlelit auditorium.

What is Cymbeline about?

Cymbeline is the queen of Ancient Britain. When her daughter Innogen secretly marries a man she disapproves of, her new husband Posthumus is banished to far-away Rome. While in exile, Posthumus decides to bet on Innogen’s innocence… but is it a gamble they’ll come to regret?

Set against the backdrop of impending war, Innogen’s quest to bridge two worlds and bring peace to both is a rich and layered late play from Shakespeare. Bringing together many of the themes he explores in his earlier, more well-known, comedies and tragedies, Cymbeline explores the place of a woman in a man’s world, the rebellion of young love, and the role of nature versus nurture.

It is one of Shakespeare’s lesser-performed works, but there have been several celebrated productions in the 21st century, including Cheek By Jowl’s tour, starring Tom Hiddleston and Gwendoline Christie, and the Globe Theatre’s 2015 revival with Jonjo O’Neill and Emily Barber.

Creative Team

Director Jennifer Tang makes her debut at the Globe with Cymbeline , following her acclaimed production of Further Than The Furthest Thing at the Young Vic. Her distinct style lends itself to a fusion of theatre and music, and in the softly lit, period setting of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, highlights the magic and humanity at the heart of this rewarding play.

Well worth preparing with a synopsis and some familiarity with the gender switching in the production. Played with light touch and comedic.

Great production of this less often performed play, with interesting gender swapped casting. 2 'covers' performing with scripts did not detract from enjoyment.
