What Is the Death Note Musical About?
When the brilliant but disillusioned high school student Light Yagami discovers a mysterious notebook, he is granted the power to decide who lives and who dies. The notebook belongs to Ryuk, a bored Shinigami, or death god, who uses it as a form of entertainment by dropping it into the human world.
Light adopts the alias “Kira” and is determined to shape society, but his control quickly spirals out of control, attracting the attention of the ruthless detective known as L. What essentially begins as a tense fight between intellect and morality, the duo are forced to face the limits of morality themselves. Set to an “electrifying, symphonic and catchy” (BroadwayWorld) score by Tony, Grammy and Emmy nominee Frank Wildhorn, Death Note: The Musical is a story about power, corruption and the consequences of absolute justice.
The History of Death Note: The Musical
Death Note began as a manga series serialised between 2003 and 2006, quickly becoming a worldwide success. It has since inspired an equally acclaimed anime adaptation, live-action films, novels and video games, cementing its place as a modern pop culture phenomenon.
The first musical adaptation of Death Note made its premiere in Tokyo in 2015 before being staged in South Korea. Concert versions were staged, including two sell-out stagings at the London Palladium and Lyric Theatre in 2023. This stage adaptation made its UK premiere at the Barbican Theatre, where it sold out its 6-week run in summer 2026.
