What Is the Opera Don Giovanni About?
Infamous Spanish libertine Don Giovanni leaves a trail of broken hearts and ruined lives in his wake, The serial lothario seduces, destroys and deceives, not caring who he hurts or what he ruins. But when one of Giovanni’s conquests ends in a murder, a terrible reckoning approaches, and Giovanni’s history of reckless seduction begins to catch up with him, and things come to a dramatic, and supernatural head at a masquerade ball. Will the lothario come out on top, or will revenge be enacted?
The History of Don Giovanni
Don Giovanni was commissioned following the success of The Marriage of Figaro. The opera premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague in 1787, and was conducted by Mozart himself. The production marked the second work Mozart worked on with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, who based his script on an existing libretto about the Spanish lothario Don Juan - the pair would later become long-term collaborators. Don Giovanni was warmly received at its premiere, and remains one of Mozart’s most influential and longest enduring works.
