"The truth is I never left you": Tickets for Jamie Lloyd’s Evita!
Musical lovers rejoice as Evita returns to the London Palladium as their big summer musical! Get ready for a double dose of Lloyd as Jamie Lloyd directs Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s beloved musical about glamorous and controversial Argentine political figure Eva Peron. There have long been rumours that Lloyd’s “stylistically groundbreaking” (BroadwayWorld) production, originally staged at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2019, would make its way back to London stages, and this revival promises to be the hottest ticket in town! What is the musical Evita about?
Based on the true life story of actress, activist and Argentine political leader Eva Perón, Rice and Lloyd Webber's musical follows Eva through the years, from humble beginnings in poverty-stricken Junín to a career as a singer, actress and model and her eventual marriage to Argentine president Juan Perón. Considered by many to be the world’s first major political celebrity, Eva was heavily involved in the policies and work of her husband. She was a controversial and divisive figure in both her native Argentina and internationally.Evita premiered in 1978 and has since become a classic, thanks in part to an iconic score including hits such as “Dont Cry for Me Argentina”, “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Oh What A Circus”. The musical has had many revivals over the years and has won multiple Olivier, Drama Desk and Tony Awards, making history as the first British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1980.
In 1996 Evita was adapted into a smash hit film starring Madonna in the titular role, and garnered multiple Academy Award nominations, snatching a trophy for Best Original Song for “You Must Love Me”.
Lloyd’s “stripped-down, super-sleek, contemporary” (Arts Desk) revival in 2019 was also critically acclaimed, earning an Olivier nomination and taking the win for the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Director and the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical.
Who is in the cast of Evita?
Casting has yet to be announced, but whoever steps into the role of the ultra-glamorous Eva has big heels to fill. In Lloyd’s 2019 revival the role was played by Samantha Pauly (Six, The Great Gatsby) in a “star-making performance” (Sunday Mirror), with previous productions starring musical theatre legends Elaine Paige (Cats, Chess) and Patti LuPone (Company, Les Miserables) who originated the roles in the West End and Broadway respectively.Creative Team
