What Is the Opera Iphigenie en Tauride About?

Iphigene and her brother Orestes are part of an ancient family, the inheritors of a bloody legacy that dates back to the dawn of time itself. The siblings are separated: Iphegene stranded on a remote island at the world's end, at the beck and call of a terrifying ruler, and Orestes is brought to the brink of madness. Both fear the other is dead, but dream of someday returning home.

When an enigmatic stranger washes up on the shores of Iphegenie's island, bringing news of the collapse of her family, the hope that she will someday see her brother again is shattered, and she believes the worst must have happened. But there may be more to the stranger than it first seems, and the situation is perhaps not quite as hopeless as Iphigenie fears…

The History of Iphigenie en Tauride

Based on the Ancient Greek play Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides, the Opera premiered in 1779 at the Paris Opera to critical acclaim. Gluck later created a German version in 1781 to celebrate the visit of the Russian Grand Duke Paul to Vienna. This remains Gluck's only opera in German. In 1889, a new German arrangement was made by Richard Strauss, which is more frequently performed than Gluck’s original. Widely regarded as Gluck’s most important work, this new staging of Gluck’s rarely performed gem, in the original French, marks the production's ENO debut.
