Shakespeare's tragedy reigns over London

Ian McKellen stars as King Lear in Chichester Festival Theatre’s celebrated production of Shakespeare’s play, transferring to the West End. The exciting new staging opens for a strictly limited 100 performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre. King Lear is an epic tragedy that sees two fathers cast out their dearest children in favour of greed and ambition. As treachery grows within families, a violent power struggle ensues with fatal consequences. Director Jonathan Munby’s acclaimed production first opened at Chichester Festival Theatre, setting the action in a contemporary Britain which thrillingly resonates with the original text’s politics.  Ian McKellen, one of Britain’s foremost actors, takes on the title role, having starred in iconic work on stage and screen since his career began in the 1960s. The show was fantastic. Sir Ian McKellen indeed reigned supreme, he even came out to the stage door to sign everyone's programmes. Although the show lasted more than 3 hours, it absolutely did not feel like that.
