Little Dancer, a brand new musical from a Tony and Olivier-winning creative team, makes its full-length UK debut following a smash-hit concert staging in 2025. The musical follows artist Edgar Degas, and the girl behind his famous statue, “Little Dancer of Fourteen Years”, Marie van Goethe, as she battles to achieve her dreams against the odds. Little Dancer comes to the Theatre Royal Haymarket, just a short walk from Piccadilly, for a strictly limited six-week run this New Year - don't miss out.
What Is the Musical Little Dancer About?
For over a century, a girl has stood in fourth position, immortalised in wax and bronze by artist and sculptor Edgar Degas. You may recognise her pose - arms behind her back, chin defiantly lifted - but do you know her name?
Little Dancer tells the story of the girl behind the famous statue, Marie van Goethe, a fourteen-year-old dance student who came from humble beginnings to fight for her dreams, and the man who created it, Edgar Degas, a wealthy artist and founding member of the Impressionist movement, who has troubles of his own. Set against the lush backdrop of Belle Époque Paris, where brutality and beauty go hand in hand, these two lives are bound together by art and ambition, the fight for legacy and the refusal to be forgotten. Evocative and achingly human, Little Dancer asks the question: do we shape our destiny, or does our destiny shape us?
The History of Little Dancer
The musical premiered in 2014 at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, DC, undergoing further development and readings before opening for a limited one-month engagement in 2019 in Seattle. A one-night-only concert staging of the show was performed in London at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in July 2025. The show now makes its full-length London debut for six weeks only, before embarking on a world tour.

The Creative Team of Little Dancer
Little Dancer has a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning collaborators behind productions including Anastasia, Ragtime and Once on This Island. Direction and choreography by five-time Tony and Olivier Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers, Crazy for You, Oklahoma!, Smash).
