Bristol Old Vic’s critically acclaimed production of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night transfers to the West End from January 2018, with tickets available now. This Pulitzer prize-winning masterpiece is an unabashed autobiographical account of O'Neill's own life, the text is considered one of the seminal American plays of the 20th century. The events of Long Day's Journey Into Night play out over the course of one fateful summer’s day, following the life of the Tyrone family. Poised on the precipice between past regrets and fears for their future, James and Mary Tyrone and their two sons find themselves re-opening the old wounds of the ones they love. As day turns to night and each member of the family indulges in their addictive vices, the truth unravels leaving behind a quartet of ruined lives. The play transfers from the Bristol Old Vic as part of the theatre’s Anniversary season by a multi award-winning team led by director Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal, Iris). Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville reprise their starring roles from the award winning production. Jeremy Irons is an award winning actor for the stage and screen. He has appeared in a variety of Bristol Old Vic productions, where he trained. Irons made his Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing for which he received a Tony Award for Best Actor. His film work includes The Lion King, Reversal of Fortune and Elizabeth I. Lesley Manville in a Olivier Award-winning actress with an extensive stage career featuring celebrated roles in productions, including Grief at the National Theatre, Ghosts at the Almeida and Six Degrees of Separation at the The Old Vic. Further cast members include Matthew Beard (The Riot Club) as Edmund Tyrone, Rory Keenan (Peaky Blinders) as James Tyrone Jr. and Jessica Regan (Doctors) as Cathleen. At the playwrights request the play was first published posthumously and was performed for the first time in Sweden in 1956. Later that year the piece opened in New York, where it was won the Tony Award for Best Play and went on to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1957. Regarded as one of the great American playwrights, O’Niell is the only writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama four times and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. His other work plays include The Iceman Cometh, Mourning Becomes Electra and Ah Wilderness!
