What Is Malory Towers About?
As one of the most beloved children’s book series, Malory Towers charts the journey of Darrell Rivers as she leaves home and enrolls at a girls’ boarding school. Largely centred on the friendship between Darrell and Gwendoline, Malory Towers is a wonderful story about personal growth, loyalty, and community.
The History of Malory Towers
Malory Towers was published as a book series between 1946 and 1951, with six more additions added by Pamela Cox in 2009. A TV series based on the series was first broadcast on CBBC in 2020, running for seven years until its final episode aired in October 2025.
The stage musical was first presented at The Passenger Shed in Bristol, where it debuted in 2019, before performing in Cambridge, York, Exeter, Manchester and Oxford. This production at the Alexandra Palace is part of the latest UK tour, which was postponed in 2020.

Malory Towers Musical Creative Team
Malory Towers has been adapted and directed by Emma Rice. This musical is co-produced with David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers.
Emma is known for her fearless work and was the Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe from 2016 to 2018 before launching her touring theatre company, Wise Children. Her infamous adaptations include Brief Encounter, The Red Shoes and Pandora’s Box.
The rest of the creative team includes set and costume by Lez Brotherston, music by Ian Ross, sound and video by Simon Baker, lighting by Malcolm Rippeth and movement and choreography by Alistair David.
