Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre weaves ABBA’s back catalogue into a witty original story. What is Mamma Mia about?

Sophie and her mother Donna have lived peacefully on a Greek island since she was a child. But as Sophie’s wedding approaches, she becomes restless. Who is her father, and would he want to walk her down the aisle?

A peek inside her mum’s diary from 19 years earlier gives her three potential names: Harry Bright, Bill Austin and Sam Carmichael. Throwing caution to the wind, she decides to invite all of them to her wedding without Donna’s knowledge.

This original story was inspired by some of Swedish pop group ABBA’s greatest hits, which are woven throughout the narrative to create cheeky, romantic and heart-rending moments as Sophie comes face-to-face with her dads and Donna has to face up to her past!

Who wrote the Mamma Mia musical?

ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus had an active role in bringing this fantastic show to the stage, which features music and lyrics from the group’s most famous songs. The story was written by playwright Catherine Johnson. Johnson later adapted her script for the successful film version which starred Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan.
